IT just wants to get shit up and running. Having been on the other side of one of these. Because we deserve it, dammit! Our STUDENTS deserve better! Our staff deserves better! We're a progressive institution that should be providing a better life for not just our patrons but our workers as well.Ĭompanies normally have cybersecurity insurance that handles all this. Start talking about it openly! DEMAND BETTER. Our bosses KNOW and they are SCARED, and they SHOULD BE because THEY SUCK. I can tell you EVERYONE is talking about this in some form or another - whether that be via private group chats, around the watercooler, or behind closed doors. Everyone is scared to say ANYTHING at KVCC, but there's a lot of injustice going on. Senior Leadership salaries are LUDICROUS - the income inequality at the college is staggering. The head of IT is hesitant to hire a dedicated Cybersecurity team out of fear of the rest of the workers at the college using them as an excuse to demand higher (read: REASONABLE) wages, which can't be provided because a lot of the higher-ups are currently WAY overpaid. HOW DOES THIS ALL PERTAIN TO THIS "SERVICE OUTAGE" In fact, some of them are directly responsible.Įveryone who isn't "someone" at the college is being viewed as replaceable at a lower wage, and even some of those "someones" who have higher titles are actively being slowly edged out in favor of diverting their work to lower ranks. People who should not have sway over who is being hired/has been hired are using their sway to influence those decisions, and the deans, provosts, and the Board are looking the other way. Staff members are fed up and are leaving or being fired for speaking out about it. Department heads are passing up qualified candidates in favor of their friends, and your experience at the college is suffering because of it. I don't mean at lower levels either, though I'm sure this is happening in some places too, but at the management level. The wrong people are being hired for the wrong reasons - because they are close personal friends, obscure family members, or as favors for friends/family. That said, I HAVE personally experienced the nepotism currently present at the college. Some of the info I'm posting has been passed down, so take it with a grain of salt. Like the Rebel guy who posted before I mentioned, senior members of IT haven't shared anything publicly because they're still not sure who did this. This is a good thing because IT was already overwhelmed before this happened - as others have already said underfunded, understaffed, and overworked. There's a 3rd party team being brought in to do that. IT is working on scanning every computer on campus. I have been told that KVCC uses a 3rd party for banking info so that SHOULD be safe. Remember those outages the previous year? Similar situation but it was because a server crashed, not because of an attack. There are backups but I do not know how far back they're from I know the last time Banner went down that IT had to use an old backup and rebuild it, so a lot of data was lost. Your personal information may have been leaked. Either way, something copied every critical file on the servers, sent it out to Lord knows where, and then deleted everything.Ĭlass records, student records, financial records, employee records, everything.

No one is sure on specifics - whether it was an internal leak, whether some unqualified/overpaid buffoon clicked on something they shouldn't have, or there was a security vulnerability in the server. This isn't about any of that, but I think it's a symptom of a system that has been exploited by those at the top making bad decisions they're either coming to regret now, or will within a short period. There's a lot of tension in almost all departments about nepotism, the wrong people being in leadership, questionable financial decisions, and deciding who gets paid what. There's a lot of stuff that's been boiling up at the school for months - even years - and I think this current situation is making it all come to the surface. Thanks to William (an alias I'm sure) and everything else that I've seen/heard about what's going on at KVCC, I figured I'd throw some more information into the ring as well.ĭisclaimer: The college hasn't explicitly shared any information regarding this, but people are talking.
